This week out of nowhere really Apple released a new app on the App store. “Apple Sports” an application designed to be a simple way of getting the latest sports scores & stats. There was no rumours to suggest we were going to be getting a new app anytime soon so this app really was an unexpected surprise.
The app launched in the US, UK and Canada. Living in the UK I’ve chosen to follow the premier league and basic very much is the word I would use to describe this app. In the screenshots below you can see the Upcoming matches page showing me all the games on Saturday. Tapping one of the games displays the betting odd’s (In a US format) as well as the current league table.
And that is just about it on Apple’s Newsroom site Apple do say that;
“Fans can easily navigate between scores and upcoming games; explore play-by-play information, team stats, line-up details, and live betting odds;1 and tap to go to the Apple TV app to watch live games from Apple and connected streaming apps.” [1]
More than anything I think this app is a secret internal test by Apple. A test in a possible new upcoming design to iOS. The buttons in the app (For example the button to select a league or manage) it’s different to the design of the rest of iOS but very similar to the design seen across VisionOS on the Apple Vision Pro. Maybe Apple want to see what people think of the new design or how it looks and works in iOS?
Another thing that makes me think it’s a test is the total lack of features for a first party iOS app. There’s no widget for your home screen, no support for the dynamic island, no live activity and not even any support for the Apple Watch.
